In the Spring of 2008 my heart was strongly telling me it was time to bring another fur baby home. If you are like myself, you understand the concept of falling head over heals in love with a fury four legged baby. After an internet search, a photo of Spanky appeared, and I knew he was the guy for me.
I contacted the rescue to set the appointment for a visit, and arrived within hours. As I greeted Spanky I professed my love, and in turn, he responded with a snarly lip and a warning growl. The shelter manager assured me he was very sweet. Spanky was not the most handsome guy due to the fact he was an older dog who walked with a limp, was severly under weight, and his spine was misaligned. During the interview process, I assured the shelter manager he would be in the best of hands. I shared with her that the other dogs at home were fed three home cooked meals a day, as well as having the luxury of daily massage, and meditation sessions. Spanky deserved to have these blessings as well. After the vet's release, and a promised follow up visit, we were on our way home! He immediately fit into the pack, and became my shadow here at the farm.
As the months passed and we were enjoying life, I had no idea that a silent killer was growing rapidly inside him. After a year with us Spanky began to lose weight and he had developed a cough which worsened over time. The diagnosis; lung cancer.
I couldn't believe it! As I researched canine cancer, my heart sank and fear for Spanky took over. I immediately began to research canine cancer and anything I could get my hands on about nutriton. Nutrition soon became the topic of conversation and the priority in our household.
One month after his diagnosis, Spanky passed quietly in my arms.
I am grateful that he was able to enjoy his last year at Bussho Pastures enjoying his life outside of the shelter.
Our beautiful growing gardens and bakery at the farm are inspired by Spanky. We miss him.
The passion I have for animals and their well being is the same passion I have for our Bark To Nature Biscuits.
If you have a chance, please visit your local shelter to adopt, sponsor, or drop off food. They really do need you.

"If you smoke, please don't smoke in the vicinity of your dog's sensitive nose and lungs. Many studies have concluded that dogs are at 60% greater risk of lung cancer in smoking households. Canine cancer affects one out of every three dogs. ~Hannah Dog
